Hey there! Thanks for stopping by the blog! We are so glad you are here!

Are you an adult who finally decided to chase that lifelong dream of playing the piano? That is so exciting! We love working with adult learners at Piano Keys for Christ, LLC. You bring so much passion and focus to the keys.

But let’s be real for a second. Being an adult student is different. You have a job. You have a family. You have a never-ending to-do list. Sometimes, your practice time feels rushed or even a little frustrating.

You might feel like you’re working hard but not seeing the progress you want. Don’t worry! It’s probably just a few small habits getting in your way.

We’ve seen it all! As the winners of the Best of Georgia 2023-2024 award, we’ve helped countless adults overcome these hurdles. We know exactly how to get you back on track.

Let’s look at the 7 most common practice mistakes adults make and: more importantly: how to fix them right now!

1. The "Speed Demon" Syndrome

This is the number one mistake! We get it. You want to hear the song at full speed. You want it to sound like the recording. So, you try to play fast right away.

Stop! Slow down!

When you play too fast too soon, your brain can’t keep up. You end up reinforcing mistakes. Your fingers "learn" the wrong notes or shaky rhythms. It’s much harder to unlearn a mistake than it is to learn it right the first time.

How to fix it: Slow down until it feels "too easy." If you can’t play it perfectly and comfortably at a slow tempo, you aren't ready to speed up yet. Use a metronome. Find a baseline tempo where you have total control. Once you nail it there, move up by just a few beats per minute. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast!

2. Mindless Noodling (The "Just Playing" Trap)

Do you ever sit down at the piano and just... play? You start at the beginning of the song. You play until you hit a mistake. You stop, maybe try that one spot again, and then go back to the beginning?

That’s called "noodling," and it’s a progress killer!

If you spend your whole practice session playing the parts you already know, you aren't actually practicing. You’re just performing for your cat.

How to fix it: Have a plan! Before you even touch the keys, decide what you want to achieve. Maybe today’s goal is just mastering the first four bars of the left hand. Or maybe it’s perfecting a specific scale. Focus on the "problem spots" first while your brain is fresh. Check out our tips on how to practice when you’re busy for more ideas!

3. The "Weekend Warrior" Approach

Life is busy. We totally get that! Many adults think, "I don’t have time during the week, so I’ll just practice for three hours on Sunday."

Unfortunately, your brain doesn't work that way. Piano is about muscle memory and neurological connections. Long, marathon sessions lead to physical fatigue and mental burnout. You’ll forget half of what you learned by the following Sunday!

How to fix it: Consistency beats intensity every single time. Aim for 15 to 20 minutes every day. That’s it! Even if you just do 10 minutes before work or after dinner, it’s better than one long session. It keeps the "language" of music fresh in your mind.

4. Avoiding the "Scary Parts"

We all have them. That one measure with the crazy finger reach. That one rhythm that makes your brain hurt. It’s tempting to skip over it or play it extra fast and hope nobody notices.

But those scary parts are where the real growth happens! If you avoid them, they will always stay scary. This is where many self-taught adults get stuck.

How to fix it: Isolate the struggle! Treat that one measure like its own mini-song. Play it ten times in a row correctly. Play it with your eyes closed. Once you conquer the "scary part," the rest of the song feels like a breeze. At Piano Keys for Christ, LLC, our instructors specialize in breaking down these hurdles so they don't feel overwhelming. Our award-winning approach makes sure you never feel stuck!

5. Skipping the Physical Prep

Adult bodies are different from kids' bodies. We carry stress in our shoulders. Our wrists might be stiff from typing all day. If you jump straight into a difficult piece without warming up, you risk injury or tension.

Tension is the enemy of great piano playing! It makes your tone sound harsh and your fingers feel heavy.

How to fix it: Spend the first five minutes of every session warming up. Do some gentle wrist circles. Practice your scales slowly. Focus on keeping your shoulders relaxed and your "bridge" (your knuckles) strong. If it hurts, stop! Check out our about page to see how we prioritize healthy, sustainable technique for all our students.

6. Playing Like a Robot

Many adults get so focused on hitting the right notes and rhythms that they forget the music! They play every note with the exact same volume and intensity. It sounds mechanical.

You didn't start piano lessons to sound like a computer, right? You want to express yourself!

How to fix it: Add expression from day one! Don't wait until you "know the notes" to add dynamics (louds and softs). Look at the markings on the page. Is it piano (soft) or forte (loud)? Think about the mood of the piece. Is it sad? Joyful? Play with intention. This makes practicing way more fun, too!

7. The "Good Enough" Correction

You hit a wrong note. You stop, fix it, and keep going. "Good enough," you think.

The problem? Your brain just recorded one "wrong" version and one "right" version. The odds are still 50/50 for the next time you play it!

To truly fix a mistake, you have to overwrite the old "recording" in your brain.

How to fix it: Use the "Rule of Three" (or even five!). Once you fix a mistake, play that section perfectly three times in a row. If you mess up on the third time, start over at one! This builds true confidence and muscle memory. You’ll show up to your next lesson feeling like a pro.
