It All Started in Detroit

Imagine a six-year-old girl. She lives in Detroit, Michigan. She has big dreams and small hands. That girl was me, Gayle Bates!

My parents saw something in me. They saw a spark. They decided to invest in my musical education early. They didn't just buy lessons. They bought into my future. My father was my biggest cheerleader. I remember him looking at me with so much confidence. He said something I will never forget.

"If I buy this piano, there is no stopping."

Those words changed everything! He bought the piano. And he was right. There was no stopping! I practiced. I learned. I grew. Music became a powerful force for good in my life. It gave me a voice. It gave me a purpose. Most importantly, it gave me a way to connect with my Creator.

The Vision of 2008

Fast forward to October 2008. The world was changing, but my heart was focused on a new mission. I felt a pull. I felt a calling. God had given me this incredible gift. He had anointed me with talent and a love for teaching. But it wasn't meant for me to keep.

I wanted to give back! I wanted to share the grace I had received.

That is when Piano Keys for Christ was born. The mission was clear from day one. We wanted to teach music through the lens of faith. We wanted to create a place where students could learn more than just songs. We wanted them to learn how to use their talents for God’s glory.

We started small. But we had big faith! We wanted to offer reasonable rates. We wanted to help beginners and adults alike. We wanted to serve our community in Stonecrest and Atlanta. And by God’s grace, we did just that.

Why "For Christ"?

You might ask, "Why include faith in piano lessons?"

It’s simple! Music is a spiritual experience. Think about it. When you hear a beautiful melody, your soul feels it. When you master a difficult piece, you feel a sense of joy. That joy comes from God!

At Piano Keys for Christ, we don’t separate the two. We pray for our students. We encourage them. we use music to build character. We want our studio to be a "Christian environment." That means kindness is the rule. Patience is our practice. We want you to feel the love of Jesus the moment you walk through the door.

A Day in the Life: Behind the Scenes

What does a normal day look like here? It’s a beautiful mix of energy and peace!

The morning usually starts with preparation. I’m looking over lesson plans. I’m setting up the studio. I want everything to be perfect for my students. We have students as young as three years old! Can you imagine the cuteness? Their eyes light up when they hit that first middle C. It’s pure magic.

In the afternoons, the studio comes alive! You’ll hear scales echoing through the halls. You’ll hear laughter. Lots of laughter! We believe learning should be fun. If you aren't smiling, we aren't doing it right.

Sometimes we have "aha!" moments. A student has been struggling with a rhythm for weeks. Then, suddenly, it clicks! They beam with pride. I beam with pride! Those are the moments that make the long hours worth it.

We also offer online lessons! On those days, the studio looks a bit different. I’m sitting in front of the screen. I’m connecting with students from all over. It’s amazing how technology allows us to share the gift of music across distances. You can learn more about our options for online vs in-person lessons here.

Winning "Best of Georgia"

God has been so good to us! We are so humbled to share that we won the "Best of Georgia" award for 2023, 2024, and 2025!

Can you believe it? This isn't just an award for me. It’s an award for our whole community. It’s for every parent who drives their child to lessons. It’s for every adult student who practices after a long day of work. It’s for the faith we’ve put into this business.

Seeing that plaque on the wall reminds me of my dad. "If I buy this piano, there is no stopping." He was so right! We aren't stopping. We are just getting started. We want to keep raising the bar for music instruction in Georgia.
