Welcome to the family! We are so excited you are starting this journey. Music is a gift that lasts a lifetime!
Buying your child’s first piano is a huge milestone. It feels big. It feels important. But it can also feel a little overwhelming! There are so many buttons, brands, and prices out there. Don't worry! We are here to help you navigate the choices.
Let’s get your student ready for success! Here are 10 things you need to know before you bring that first instrument home.
1. Weighted Keys are Non-Negotiable!
This is the most important rule! If you remember nothing else, remember this: get weighted keys.
What does that mean? It means the keys feel heavy like a real acoustic piano. When your child presses a key, they should feel a little resistance. This builds finger strength! Without it, their fingers stay "lazy."
Standard plastic keyboards are often too light. They feel like toys. We want your child to develop professional technique from day one! Look for terms like "hammer action" or "fully weighted." It makes a world of difference. Your child will thank you later!
2. Digital vs. Acoustic: The Great Debate
Should you buy a traditional wooden piano or a digital one? Both are great! But for most beginners, digital is the way to go.
Digital pianos are much more affordable. You can get a high-quality digital piano for a fraction of the cost of an acoustic. Plus, they never need tuning! An acoustic piano needs a professional tuner once or twice a year. That adds up fast!

3. Think About Space and Portability
Acoustic pianos are heavy! They stay where you put them. If you move houses, you have to hire professional movers.
Digital keyboards are different. They are portable! You can move them from the living room to the bedroom. You can take them to a friend's house! If you have a smaller home or apartment, a digital keyboard saves so much space.
Measure your room before you buy! You want a dedicated space where your child feels inspired to practice. A cramped corner makes practice feel like a chore. Give them room to breathe and create!
4. You Need All 88 Keys
You might see smaller keyboards with 61 or 76 keys. They look cute and cheap! But don't do it!
A standard piano has 88 keys. Music is written for the full range! If your child practices on a smaller keyboard, they will eventually run out of notes. They will hit the end of the keyboard and realize they can't play the song correctly.
Save yourself the trouble of upgrading later. Buy an 88-key instrument right from the start! It's an investment in their long-term growth.

5. Set a Realistic Budget
How much should you spend? It's a common question!
For a solid beginner digital piano with weighted keys, expect to spend between $400 and $900. This is the "sweet spot." You get great sound and great feel without breaking the bank.
If you want an acoustic piano, a good beginner model usually starts around $3,000 to $6,000. It's a bigger jump!
Start where you are comfortable. We want this to be a joyful experience, not a financial burden. If you're ready to start lessons regardless of your instrument status, visit our new students page!
6. Sound Quality Inspires Practice
If the piano sounds like a tinny computer, your child won't want to play. It's that simple!
Good digital pianos use "samples" from real world-class grand pianos. They sound rich and deep. When your child plays a beautiful note, they feel like a star! This keeps them motivated.
Listen to the speakers before you buy. Or, even better, wear a good pair of headphones. Does it sound like a real piano? Does it make you want to close your eyes and listen? If yes, you found a winner!
7. Don't Forget the Bench and Stand!
You found the keyboard. Great! But where is your child going to sit?
Don't use a dining room chair. Don't use a stool. They are usually the wrong height. Proper posture is everything in piano! If they sit too low or too high, their wrists will hurt.
Buy a dedicated piano bench. Get a sturdy "Z-style" or "furniture-style" stand. If the keyboard wobbles while they play, it will frustrate them. A solid setup makes for a happy student!
8. Stick with Reputable Brands
There are a lot of "no-name" brands online. They are very cheap! But be careful. These often lack the quality and durability your child needs.
We recommend sticking with the pros! Brands like Yamaha, Casio, and Roland are industry leaders for a reason. They last for years. Their weighted key technology is top-notch.
Check out the Yamaha P-series or the Casio Privia line. These are fan favorites for families just like yours!
9. The Miracle of Headphones
This is the secret weapon for every parent! Most digital pianos have a headphone jack.
Your child can practice at 6 AM. They can practice at 10 PM. And you won't hear a thing! It gives them a sense of privacy. They can make mistakes and try new things without feeling "watched" or "heard."
It’s a win-win! They get to focus, and you get some peace and quiet. Make sure to buy a comfortable pair of over-ear headphones.
10. Consider the Resale Value
Children's interests change. We hope they play forever! But if they don't, you want an instrument that holds its value.
Well-known brands like Yamaha hold their resale value very well. If you decide to upgrade or sell later, you can get a good portion of your money back on the used market. It’s a smart move!
